Power to the Medal
It’s one of the Presidential perks that I get to award two medals. The first, the Stephen Tallents Medal is given to a CIPR member who has contributed enormously to the Institute. The second is the President’s Medal which is given to someone outside the industry who has been a role model in their communication.
Although there are many people I admire, there was never any doubt who would get my vote. I believe that when you award a medal you do it not only because that person has a proven track record but because they also inspire, lead and break new ground...
Ian Wright, leading a global team of 250 professionals for Diageo not only has the in house gravitas you’d expect but he also headed the successful Golley Slater office in Birmingham. He has co-chaired the Excellence awards judging for many years and, of course, is also a Past President. Ian, a fellow Midlander, is quiet, unassuming and a real gentleman, and an inspiration to many.
I was able to award my President’s Medal at a reception at the CIPR to Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham. I know he needs no introduction - he’s a fellow Brummie who literally has been the voice for businesses across the UK and Brand Britain globally. He was the reason why at Liquid PR we joined the CBI – he made a member organisation seem crucial in its advice and support of businesses and you knew as DG of the CBI he’d be speaking on behalf of you, waging the war against another amount of ridiculous and unnecessary red tape…..but above all he made the message understandable, relevant and he was and still is never afraid to swim against the tide and be controversial.
So, there you go – my heroes, all from my region and all worthy of recognition. In my opinion, these are the people that young people should be aspiring to follow, not some over inflated celebrity or mindless talent show. These are the people who really are leading the way and providing role models for us all.
